Can You Tile Over Tile? You Carry the Failure
Yes, you can tile over existing ceramic or porcelain tile when the old layer is well bonded, the structure already meets the movement limit for the new finish, the assembly is dry or its waterproofing can be proven, and the added thickness still clears doors, the toilet flange, and transitions. A dry backsplash is the usual candidate. An existing shower or a wood-framed floor can look sound while hiding short mortar coverage, a failed membrane, or deflection beyond L/360, and you carry that consequence after the new grout is in.
I spent nineteen seasons resetting shared rooms on a clock. Overlaying tile raises the plane the casters had to clear. The person who lives with the door that no longer swings is you.
When is an overlay the right call?
An overlay is a second bonded finish on old ceramic or porcelain. The Tile Council of North America says this is done regularly where there is no floor-height or wall-thickness limit and the existing tile is well bonded. The renovation methods live in the TCNA Handbook under TR712 and TR713.
Work the assembly in this order:
- Name the old surface as a dry wall or backsplash, a floor, or a shower. Those three are different jobs.
- Prove the existing tile is well bonded by more than a tap: cracked grout, rocking corners, rusted fasteners, and damp drywall all veto an overlay.
- For floors, confirm the framed structure already meets the deflection ratio for the new finish.
- Measure finished height as new tile plus mortar plus any membrane, then check the door, toilet flange, and transitions.
- Use only the mortar maker’s overlay system, including the stated prep for glaze, or tear the old tile out.
Dust is a day. A failed overlay is a second demolition through two layers of ceramic.
Why is a hollow-sound tap test not proof?
Tapping a tile for a hollow note is easy, which is why it keeps getting sold as proof. A dull thunk can flag a loose piece at the face. It cannot verify concealed moisture damage, substrate deflection, bond continuity behind the old mortar, or a failed shower waterproofing layer.
ANSI A108.5, quoted from the November 2017 edition by Scott Carothers at the Ceramic Tile Foundation, requires 80 percent average contact in dry interiors and 95 percent on exterior or shower work, checked by removing at least three tiles, with corners and edges fully supported. A knuckle on the face does not produce those percentages.
The old bed is now your substrate. If the original installer left voids, the overlay sits on them. NTCA’s TileLetter is explicit for wet work: you have to consider whether 95 percent mortar coverage was achieved in the original installation.
I kept a locking-caster ledger because a wheel that rolled on Tuesday still failed on Saturday if the stop was missing. The tap test is Tuesday. The leak behind the shower receptor is Saturday, and it is yours.
How does a dry backsplash differ from a floor or a shower?
Backsplash, shower, and floor all start with old tile. They do not share waterproofing or movement risk.

A dry backsplash is the overlay that matches the internet advice. Organic mastic, which ANSI A108.4 still allows on some dry walls, has no business on a shower floor. The Ceramic Tile Foundation’s wet-area notes from the TCNA Handbook put it plainly: organic adhesive may be used on walls only; do not use it on a floor or curb, and do not bond tile to a membrane with it.
Peel-and-stick tile over existing tile belongs in this dry-wall bucket, and only when the sheet manufacturer lists that use. It is not a shower-pan substitute.
What floor movement must already be true?
Late in the evening someone upstairs moves around, then stops. The house settles, and so do you. That bounce is deflection. Ceramic does not ride it the way a caster wheel does.
The TCNA Handbook’s substrate-requirements language, as restated in Floor Trends and in LATICRETE TDS 123, sets maximum allowable floor-member live-load and concentrated-load deflection at L/360 for ceramic tile, where L is the clear span of the supporting member. On a 10-foot span that is 120 ÷ 360, or one-third of an inch.
L/720 is the stone figure. The Ceramic Tile Foundation, citing the Handbook, sets L/720 for natural stone on wood-framed floors and L/360 for ceramic. On that same 10-foot span, L/720 is one-sixth of an inch. Do not import the stone ratio onto a porcelain bathroom floor.
An overlay adds dead load. The old floor had to meet the ratio before the second tile went down. A tap on a 12-by-24 face cannot tell you what the joists are doing between supports.
What extra proof does a shower overlay need?
Tile over tile in a shower is the neighboring-subject error at its worst. A flat, clean face tile can sit on a ruined membrane.
Wet-area mortar coverage is 95 percent under ANSI A108.5 for shower installations, with corners and edges supported. That number applies to the old bed you are about to bury and to the new bed you are about to comb. Scott Carothers’ Foundation piece on coverage describes the field failure when edges stay open: water stores behind the grout, joints stay dark, and the only repair is removal.
You need to know what the receptor is, whether an ANSI A118.10 membrane is still intact, and where it terminates at the curb, the valve, and the drain. MAPEI’s ECO Prim Grip sheet lists existing ceramic as a primer substrate and says not to use that primer for water immersion. A primer is not a shower membrane. If you cannot prove the membrane, tear out to it.
How much will the finished floor rise?
Tile-over-tile floor height is new tile plus new mortar plus any leveling compound or membrane. Counting only the tile is how a door starts scraping.
Measure the old tile with calipers at an exposed edge. Daltile’s Core Fundamentals Platinum sales sheet lists the 12-by-24 floor tile at 5/16 inch and the 8-by-48 in the same line at 3/8 inch. Nominal face size is not thickness.
Custom Building Products VersaBond TDS-119 (12 December 2023) requires ANSI A108.5, a bed 3/32 inch (2.38 mm) to 1/4 inch (6 mm) after beat-in for mortars without an ANSI “H” rating, and 80 percent dry / 95 percent wet coverage. Using the 5/16-inch Daltile 12-by-24: 5/16 + 3/32 = 13/32 inch (about 10 mm) at the low end; 5/16 + 1/4 = 9/16 inch (about 14 mm) at the high end.
I carried a 6-inch wheel-clearance gauge. Field-measure the remaining door gap against that future floor. NFPA 80-2019 §4.8.4.1, as quoted by Lori Greene, caps fire-door clearance at 3/4 inch (19 mm) to the finished floor. Most interior bath doors are not fire doors. A door that now clears 1/2 inch will bind on a 9/16-inch overlay.
The toilet flange has to bear on the new finished floor. Fine Homebuilding wants the flange underside sitting on that floor; raise the floor and you add spacer rings, not stacked wax.
Which mortar system actually bonds to old tile?
Polymer-modified thinset is the name people repeat. The technical sheet’s prep line controls the bond.
VersaBond TDS-119 lists existing ceramic tile, scarified, as a suitable substrate. Custom says to mechanically abrade well-bonded ceramic, rinse, and let it dry. Smooth glaze should be scarified. Surfaces treated with Custom’s MBP Multi-Surface Bonding Primer are a separate listed substrate.
TCNA’s existing-ceramic FAQ says not all thin-sets, including polymer-modified ones, can bond directly to tile. A greasy glaze will laugh at a bag that merely says “modified.”
Custom Building Products TDS-170 is Aqua Mix Ex-Treme, an acidic cleaner with a published pH of 2 to 3 and coverage of 200 to 1,000 square feet per gallon depending on dilution. It is a stain-removal sheet, not a tile-over-tile mortar approval.
For the new bed, keep ANSI coverage: 80 percent interior dry, 95 percent wet and exterior, edges supported. Lift tiles during set to see it. The NTCA Trowel & Error video exists because those percentages are easy to miss.
Peel-and-stick adhesives and tub-and-tile mastic can cover a dry backsplash when their labels say so. They are the wrong class for a shower receptor and for a floor that has to meet A108.5.
When does removal win?
Removal wins when you cannot verify the old bond, the floor stiffness, the waterproofing, or the finished height. It also wins when a loose tile would take a new 24-inch plank with it, when the shower pan is unknown, and when the door or toilet will not clear the extra 13/32 to 9/16 inch.
You inherit every void in the old bed. Future repairs cut through two ceramics. You can still overlay a dry, well-bonded backsplash. Walk away from a shower you cannot open.
I once dropped a scenery flat from an overloaded rack. Every high slot gained a stop after that. The new tile is the scenery. The old bed is the rack. If the stop is missing, you are the one standing under it.

How can I cover bathroom tiles without removing them?
A ceramic overlay or a manufacturer-listed peel-and-stick product can cover sound, dry bathroom tile. The old ceramic still has to be well bonded and prepared for the new adhesive. Peel-and-stick is not a shower-pan substitute. Measure door swing, outlets, and the toilet flange before you add any thickness.
Is it better to remove tiles or tile over them?
Removal is better when you cannot prove the old bond, the waterproofing, the floor stiffness, or the finished height.
